What’s your dream tourist destination — either a place you’ve been and loved, or a place you’d love to visit? What about it speaks to you? Photographers, artists, poets: show us VACATION.
My living the dream vacation is another week in Eastport, Maine – The easternmost city in the United States.
For three of the last four years, we have made the journey to Eastport after falling in love with the area. We go with our fifth wheel – Wild Thing II and always reserve a waterfront campsite at Seaview Campground. From this campsite, the view is predominantly of Deer Isle and Campobello Island, both in Canada. The view includes the Old Sow Whirlpool – second largest in the world, whales, eagles, and absolute serenity.
Day trips have included the Reversing Tidal Falls @ Pembroke, first sunrise over America at West Quoddy Head – easternmost spot in the United States, then breakfast on Campobello Island on the way to Head Harbor at East Quoddy Head, and the village of Lubec. We generally take the ferry over to Deer Isle for forays up into Canada along the western shores of the Bay of Fundy. This year’s ultimate day trip will be to Fort Kent, maine – the northern terminus of US Route One.
The city of Eastporitself has its own delights. Each trip up always includes one if not two whale, eagle & seabird watching trips on a converted sardine schooner. Imagine seeing a finback lunge feed. Imagine looking up into a clear dark sky at the humbling brilliance of the Milky Way. The Waco diner, Raye’s Mustard Mill – North America’s last remaining stone-ground mustard mill, and Eastport’s Pirate Festival! Shiver me timbers & rattle me bones. Arrggghhhh
But it is not all about day tripping. Some days we stay at the campsite to watch the tide rise and fall across its 18 – 22 foot range. Due to the proximity to Canadian cell towers, (international roaming charges will apply) our iPhones & iPads are set to the run silent mode, if not completely off. In other words, we disconnect, then disengage from our cyber communities of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, et al.
Eastport, Maine is a secret not to be told or shared.
